Ashes in the Snow is the coming-of-age story of 16-year-old Lina Vilkas, who is deported to Siberia amidst Stalin’s reign of terror in the Baltic region during WWII. An aspiring artist, Lina secretly documents her harrowing journey with her artwork, hoping that her drawings may reconnect her with her father, from whom the family has been forcefully separated.
The lead roles are played by the British actress Bel Powley, the break-out star of Diary of a Teenage Girl (by Marielle Heller) and Jonah Hauer-King.
Ben York Jones, an American actor and screenwriter best known for co-writing and starring in Like Crazy by Drake Doremus, adapted Šepetys's story. The film is an American/Lithuanian coproduction involving the U.S. based companies Sorrento Productions and Super Crispy Entertainment and Lithuania‘s Tauras Films. „It‘s the first film on such a scale after Lithuania regained independence filmed together with an international team and which, we are planning, will be screened in the entire world“, says film produser Žilvinas Naujokas.
Shooting started on 20 January 2016. After shooting in the Curonian Spit, a stand-in for the Gulag camps in the Russian Arctic, the crew will move near Vilnius at the beginning of February 2016, where Altay yurtas are already built. The theatrical release in the USA is planned for 2016.
