Historic cinema re-opens in Kaunas

    The oldest cinema in Lithuania, Romuva, reopened it doors on October 1, for the Kaunas film festival.

    The cinema, which dates to 1939, is 80% owned by the city of Kaunas, 20% in private ownership. Leased ot UAB Rosh in 2002, for a 10-year period, the cinema was closed in 2007. The city began efforts to reopen the cinema last year.

    "We hope that the uncertainties concerning Romuva theatre will also be solved in the nearest future," Sigitas Šliažas, head of the Culture Division of the Kaunas City Council, said.

    Fifty screenings will be held in the cinema during the Kaunas festival (www.kinofestivalis.lt), running October 1-11.
