Malta’s workshop attendee Aleksandar Bundalo, owner of the company Sound Villain Ltd, started as a sound recorder and sound designer and moved to film production after a tragic event.
“The background of the company was primarily in production sound and sound design, but in 2012 a few other fellow filmmakers and I decided to make our own project which was dedicated to a friend of ours who unfortunately passed away,” Bundalo told FNE. “We applied for the local film fund and we got it. The process from preparation to production and finally post production went well. We are still in postproduction and A Tuna Can Philosophy by Dejan Desnica (produced by Sound Villain Ltd and Foliberius) will be ready soon.”
He is also working on Marion Mitterhammer‘s feature Night Trash, a coproduction between the German-Austrian company Rokonstreetfilm and Sound Villain. “We made a coproduction deal offering production and postproduction of sound, production management, first AD and second AD. This secured us a percentage of the sales and it is a potential financing option for our next feature film which will be managed in-house. What was most important is that from this project a very strong relationship with German-Austrian companies and talents emerged. Several other projects are in the pipeline on a coproduction basis,” Bundalo said.
Another of his projects is the short film Shab/Clouds by Martin Bonnici (produced by Shadeedna Films). The script for a feature film is currently being written.
His expectations from the producers workshop in Cannes range from “networking” and “inquiring about necessary points while making deals”, to “understanding contracts and their most tangible clauses, how to protect your project in the best way while scouting for investors and coproductions, how to choose the most suitable distributor, etc....”.
Even if he is at the beginning of his career in film production, Bundalo knows exactly what he enjoys about it: “Well, since the film is all about a make-believe world, it is a challenge to create this world which is not only on the set but around it as well. That is working with film people to create this illusion that audiences will be able to feel it, understand it and finally believe it.”
