Kalkara is the site of the Mediterranean Film Studios, known for its water tanks. The companies were selected after the commission requested an expression of interest. They include two Italian companies, two British companies (including Pinewood Studios) and one US company.

The proposals are due by 22 December 2016. The development will result in the construction of Malta’s first sound stages and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the growth of the Maltese film industry and pay an annual fee.
