Nominations for the 2014 Polish Eagles were announced on 4 February 2014 in Warsaw, where previous winners presented the list of newly nominated actors and filmmakers that will compete for the prizes.
This year 46 feature films and 55 documentaries were eligible for nominations. The Polish Film Academy is introducing on-line voting in all 18 categories, following the American Film Academy that implemented a similar system in 2013.
"The Polish Film Academy had certainly modernized the process and is keeping up with what is going on abroad. The on-line voting and on-line access to the movies gives all the members a chance to make their opinion known and then the verdict is really in accordance with what the film professionals think and how they judge the quality of modern Polish cinema," Grażyna Torbicka, a film journalist, creator of the Two Riversides Festival and member of the Academy, told FNE.
The nominations were dominated by the moving drama Ida directed by Paweł Pawlikowski which scored 10 nods in various categories, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography. The Polish-Danish coproduction won the Grand Prix at the 29. Warsaw Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival and it has sparked the interest of international distributors following its international premiere at the Toronto International film Festival. The film was sold to over 30 countries including US, Canada and Israel (sales agent Fandango).
The winner at IFF in Montreal, the Polish drama Life Feels Good from Maciej Pieprzyca received seven nominations in key categories. The challenging drama about a young man overcoming his disability was produced by Tramway in coproduction with the Polish Film Institute, Silesia Film Institute, Telewizja Polska and Monternia.pl.
Six nominations were given to Imagine, a Polish/French/Portuguese coproduction from Zjednoczenie Artystow i Rzemieslnikow Sp. z o.o. (ZAIR), KMBO Production, Filmes do Tejo in coproduction with Film and Music Entertainment, Canal + Cyfrowy and WFDiF. The enchanting story about a blind man teaching his peers how to concur the world with other senses, represented by Beta Cinema, was sold to over 20 countries including Russia, Canada, the US and Germany.
"It is great that the presence of coproductions is so strong in this year's nominations. It means that we are a part of the European cinema and that there is a flow of thoughts and ideas that is finding an audience not only in Poland but also abroad. It is wonderful that our most talented filmmakers want to work both in Poland and other countries and more over that they feel comfortable to do that. From a market point of view this is crucial and I am glad that our cinema is developing in that direction," the President of the Polish Film Academy Dariusz Jabłoński told FNE.
Almost all of the nominated productions were created with the financial support of the Polish Film Institute and regional film funds. The Polish Academy also gives an annual prize for the Best European Film. The nominations include La Migliore offerta by Giuseppe Tornatore, Sugar Man directed by Malik Bendjelloul and Blue Is The Warmest Color from Abdellatif Kechiche. The celebratory gala for the Polish Eagles will take place on 10 March 2014 and the Lifetime Achievement Award winner will be announced on 4 March 2014.
