Piotr Gliński Chosen as the New Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage

    WARAW: Polish sociologist, professor and university lecturer Piotr Gliński will replace Małgorzata Omilanowska as the new Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

    After Polish party Law and Justice won the parliamentary election on 25 October 2015 with 39.1 % of the votes making it the largest party in the parliament, the New Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło announced her new cabinet on 9 November 2015.

    Born in 1954 in Warsaw, Piotr Gliński is a graduate of Sociology Institute and Economy Science Institute at Warsaw University. Since the last 1970s he was professionally active at the Philosophy and Sociology Institute at the Polish Science Academy (PAN). He received his associate professor rank at the Białystok University, where he also heads the Institute of Sociology. He participated in the work of the Committee for Research and Forecasting Poland in 2000 and the Committee of Man and the Environment. He has been a consultant for national and international institutions, including the Polish ministries and the United Nations Development Programme. In 1986, he was one of the organizers of the Section of Social Forecasting of the Polish Sociological Association (PSA) and from 2005 to 2011 he served as its President. In 1989 he became a member of the Social Ecological Institute, which he headed from 1997 to 2003. He is also a member of the Collegium Invisibile and received the title of professor of humanities in 2008. He is the brother of Polish film director, Robert Gliński.

    "We want to develop Polish culture in two directions, the first is to stabilize the situation of Polish culture institutions, artists and creators as well as introducing a just accord, so that the groups that haven't been able to get support in the past eight years could also participate in culture. (...)The second direction and the foundation of what we want to achieve is fusing what culture is giving us with patriotic values, so that this field of culture would be rich with Polish tradition, Polish patriotism, everything that unites us a shows our identity" said Piotr Gliński in an interview for Radio Łódź after receiving the nomination.
