Żuławski, who succumbed to cancer, was lauded as a uniquely original Polish filmmaker.
His 1972 film The Devil was banned in Poland. He moved to France and went on to screen his 1981 film Possession at Cannes, winning the best actress award for Isabelle Adjani.
His 2015 French/Portugese coproduction Cosmos marked his return to filmmaking after a 15-year absence.
