FNE at Gdynia Polish Film Festival Competition: Suicide Room

By Katarzyna Grynienko

In his feature debut Suicide Room, Jana Komasa creates a thrilling story about the dangers of modern technology and the problems of the young generation.

{mosimage}Suicide Room follows the life of a high school senior Dominik. He is popular, dates the prettiets girl in school and comes from a wealthy family. All of this is disrupted once he gets involved with a mysterious girl he meets online, who introduces him to the virtual world of the Suicide Room.

The film was produced by Studio Filmowe KADR (www.sfkadr.com) using mixed film techniques including over 20 minutes of computer animation. The budget of the film was over 5 million PLN with 2 million PLN in financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl).

Due to close co-operation between KADR and PFI the film found an international sales agent, Dutch company LevelK (www.levelk.dk), while it was still in production. The film had its international premiere in Berlin where it was very well received. "Berlin likes film with modern, current and engaged topics. The Suicide Room is such a film. A very mature debut and an important voice of a young filmmaker, produced on the highest international level," Izabela Kiszka the head of International Relations at the Polish Film Institute told FNE.

{mosimage}"Three years ago, when we started this project, themes of Internet and virtual reality were closer to science-fiction. Now they are more real and we can observe a wave of movies focused on this subject, such as Avatar or The Social Network. For Poland it is the first project of that kind, both in terms of the script and the level of technology," the director told FNE.

Komasa is considered one of the most interesting Polish directors of the young generation. Born in 1981, he is a graduate of the Directing Department in Film School in Łodz. Before completing his feature debut he directed several documentaries, theater plays and music videos. He was a part of the Ode To Joy project, a film that included shorts from three promising young filmmakers from Film School in Lodz. His short Warsaw was awarded at several film festivals including the Polish Film Festival and the Platinum award at WorldFest Independent Film Festival. Currently Komasa is working on his next feature film, a modern take on the theme of the Warsaw Uprising, The City.

{mosimage}Suicide Room was distributed in Polish cinemas on 4 March 2011, with over 70,000 viewers during the opening weekend. The film received critical praise in Poland and was recently awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the 4th OFF Plus Camera in Kracow.

"We plan to distribute this film internationally and we are especially interested in meeting American distributors, as the subject of the picture might be especially appealing for the audience in the USA," Komasa said. The Polish distributor of the picture is ITI Cinema (www.iticinema.com.pl).
