Georgian director Rezo Gigineishvili was selected with Hostages, in which the longing for freedom and independence escalates into the readiness to use violence by young Soviet citizens during an airplane hijacking set in 1983.
The film is a coproduction between Russia’s INK TV and NEBO Film Company, Georgia’s 20 Steps Productions and Poland’s Extreme Emotions, and stars Merab Ninidze, Darejan Kharshiladze, Tina Dalakishvili and Irakli Kvirikadze. Rezo Gigineishvili’s debut feature will have its world premiere at the Berlinale.
Requiem for Mrs. J / Rekvijem za gospodju J. by Bojan Vuletić will also have its world premiere in Berlinale’s Panorama section.
Famous Serbian actress Mirjana Karanovic is Mrs J, a middle-aged widow who decides to commit suicide in this dark comedy produced by Nenad Dukic through Serbia’s SEE Film Pro in coproduction with Pavlina Jeleva through Bulgaria’s Geopoly Film, Tomi Salkovski through Macedonia’s Skopje Film Studio.
Teona Mitevska returns to the Berlinale with a bitter depiction of Macedonian adolescents trying to get their bearings. When the Day Had no Name is a Macedonian/Belgian/Slovenian coproduction produced by Sisters and brother Mitevski in coproduction with Entre Chien et Loup and Vertigo. The main characters are played by Leon Ristov, Hanis Bagashov, Dragan Mishevski and Stefan Kitanovic. The film will also have its world premiere in Panorama.
The last CEE country selected for 2017 Berlinale’s Panorama is the Hungarian film 1945 directed by Ferenc Török, with Péter Rudolf, Bence Tasnádi and Tamás Szabó, which will have its European premiere at the Berlinale.
