CEE Sees Strong Growth in 2016 Cinema Box Office

    BRUSSELS: Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia had some of the strongest increase in cinema attendance and box office results in Europe in 2016, according the latest UNIC (International Union of Cinemas) provisional update.

    Poland registered over 50 m admissions and its best-ever year, with box office up 17.6 percent and admissions up 16.5 percent. Three Polish films helped drive the increases, reflecting the growing strength of domestic filmmaking over the past several years.

    In Slovakia, box office was up a remarkable 23.5 percent with admissions up 23.8 percent. In the neighboring Czech Republic, box office rose 20.5 percent and admissions were even higher, up 20.6 percent.

    Lithuania also had a notable 14.9 percent increase in box office, with admissions up 9.8 percent, and Romania’s box office rose 10.2 percent, while admissions rose 7.5 percent. Double digit increases were also noted in Serbia, Latvia, Estonia and Croatia. No other region in Europe came close to those results.
