Central European films compete for Golden Globes slot

    Films from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania, Lithuania, and Poland are among 53 titles qualifying for a chance at the Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film.

    The list includes three titles competing for an Academy Award nomination: Loss (Lithuania), Karamozovs (Czech Republic/Poland), and The Rest is Silence (Romania).

    The Czech Republic and Poland received mulltiple nods: Poland's Four Nights with Anna and the Czech war drama Tobruk.

    Also attracting attention is the Slovak block-buster Bathory, a co-production with the Czech Republic. Turkey's Oscar hopeful Three Monkeys also made the cut.

    Nominations will be announced on December 11, and the Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 11, 2009.
