PRODUCTION: From Romania to Zion in Preproduction

By Iulia Blaga

BUCHAREST: Producer-director Oana Giurgiu is in preproduction with From Romania to Zion, a long documentary on Jewish immigration from Romania to Israel and the present relations between both countries. She plans to use archive materials and interviews in order to build a light, colourful film, "a journey through family life stories" with a glimpse at the complexity of 130 years of history.

Din Romania spre Sion/ From Romania to Zion (trailer here:http://www.librafilm.net/movie/romania-to-zion-din-romania-spre-sion) is looking for potential partners, although some shooting already started. Principal photography is set for March-July 2012.

There will be two versions of the film - a 60 minute edit for TV and a 90 minute version for festivals and possible cinema release, Giurgiu told FNE. She is also the screenwriter, and Mihai Tănase is the DOP. The film is produced by Libra Film (www.librafilm.net) with a budget of 150,000 euro, partially covered by a production grant of 72,115 EUR (300,000 RON) from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) and MEDIA (ec.europa.eu) slate funding. The project was developed in Achidoc workshop organized by La Femis (www.lafemis.fr), a Media training initiative.

As one of the producers from Libra Film, Giurgiu has produced several films, among them Peter Strickland's Katalin Varga, awarded with the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale 2009.

The premiere of From Romania to Zion is set for November 2012.
