The Last Kalderash / Ultimul căldărar is based on a journalist piece published on their popular website Teleleu.eu, and focuses on a Roma family run by a copper worker (kalderas / căldărar), who goes with his family to gather scrap in France a few months a year because his copper kettles and buckets don’t sell anymore.
The aim is to show how a traditional occupation is gradually disappearing and also to capture the vitality and humanity of an ethnic group which is facing racial bias both in Romania and abroad. The directors camped in their village of Corcova, Mehedinți and spent time with the characters, gradually befriending them.
Bumbuț and Stancu produced the film themselves through Teleleu.eu and worked without a team. Stancu did the research, while Bumbuț shot with a photo camera received at Sony World Photography Awards and edited using tutorials found with Google. No postproduction services were used, but the film is very well crafted.
The initial budget was 1,200 EUR. Bumbuț told FNE that they don’t have any plans regarding the distribution yet, so TIFF is a good opportunity for sales, distribution and festivals. A second documentary is on its way.
