Firefly Starts Construction on Belgrade Film Studio

By

BELGRADE: The newly founded Belgrade-based production company Firefly is about to start the construction of the Firefly Studios outside Belgrade, housing two 2,000 square metre sound stages and a smaller 800 square metre one with a water tank, as well as four hectares of backlot, production offices and related facilities. The whole area to be constructed occupies 12,000 square metres. The construction is expected to be completed in 2020.

The lack of film studios and sound stages has become a major topic of discussion in the Balkans, as well as in the Baltics, as new and increased film incentives are attracting more foreign productions than the local industry has been able to handle.

The layouts have been drawn by Miljen Kljaković Kreka, the renowned Serbian production designer. He's worked with various revered directors, including Barry Levinson, Emir Kusturica, Jean-Pierre Jeneut, Uli Edel, Majid Majidi, Ademir Kenović, and he's won several prestigious European awards.

Firefly Productions was launched last year by former BBC news producer Ivana Miković in partnership with a group of experienced producers from Serbia. Boban Jevtić, the former director of Film Center Serbia, is Firefly’s Head of Strategy and Content Development.
