PRAGUE: Slovenian producer Danijel Hocevar of Vertigo told FNE that he is coproducing a film on the legendary Czech director Frantisek Cap with the Czech company Evolution Films.

The documentary, Cap/Moments of Decision, will be a debut from director Urban Arsenjuk.

The film tells the story of Frantisek Cap, one of the most important Czech directors preceding the Czech New Wave. Cap’s Czech career stretched from the 1930’s through WWII, after which he emigrated to Slovenia and Germany. Cap, who had been somewhat of a golden boy in the Czech Republic, the winner of awards at Cannes and Venice and the lover of the founder of the Barrandov film studio, died penniless in 1972, having directed almost nothing in the last decade of his life. His legacy included the 1953 Slovenian film Spring, the first Slovenian film about the young student generation, and he was a mentor to Yugoslav filmmakers.

The 80,000 EUR film is coproduced by Czech TV which is providing 15,000 EUR and in-kind services, and Slovenian public broadcaster RTVS which is providing in-kind services. It received a grant of 40,000 EUR from the Slovenian Film Center. Hocevar said much of the film will be told through clips from the director’s own films provided by the Czech National Film Archives.
