FESTIVALS: The Family Wins the Slovenian Film Festival Portorož

    PORTOROŽ: Rok Biček's documentary The Family won the Vesna Award for best film of the 20th Slovenian Film Festival, which ran in Portorož from 12 to 16 September 2017. The Vesna award for the best feature film went to Janez Burger’s drama Ivan, a film that also won seven other awards.

    Hanna Slak won the Vesna Award for best director for The Miner, which also won two other Vesna awards.

    Maruša Majer won the Vesna Award for the best actress for Ivan. The film also won five other Vesna awards (best feature film, script, cinematography, music, make-up) and three non-statutory awards: the Teleking Best Feature Film in the fiction film category, the Slovenian Art Cinema Association Award and the Slovenian Federation of Film Critics Award.

    Jan Cvitković’s The Basics of Killing won four Vesna Awards (DoP, music, costume design, sound), and Miha Knific’s Perseverance won three awards (supporting actor, supporting actress, best original AV work).

    The Audience Award went to Boris Petkovič’s Let Him Be a Basketball Player, which also won a Vesna award for production design.

    Altogether 97 films (51 in the competition and 46 out of the competition) were screened in Portorož. Eleven feature films and six long documentaries competed for the Vesna awards.
