GOLDEN LION FOR THE WRESTLER -
distributed by SPI International Central Europa:
Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic
"The Wrestler," directed by Darren Aronofsky with a brilliant performance by Mickey Rourke that critics regard as his best ever, won the Golden Lion for best picture at the Venice Film Festival.
Due to a technicality in festival rules, the star of the winning film could not be awarded the prize for best actor, "Copa Volpi".
The film follows the comeback of an aging wrestler who despairs as his body gives up on him and friends and family turn their backs. The style of "The Wrestler" differs from previous movies directed by Arofonsky, but confirms his capability to hypnotize the audience. It shows the character of Ram full of emotional truth and private pathos, perfectly performed by Rourke. The award seals his comeback from the Hollywood wilderness and suggests there is more to come as Rourke affirms he is ready to ditch his bad-boy image and cooperate with directors.
