Potoroz Festival Spotlight: Slovenian Girl

Damjan Kozole's Slovenian Girl, a film about greed and lost ambitions, is the latest of his transition film series that started with Porno Film (2000) and Spare Parts (2003, nominated for Golden Bear in Berlin).

Aleksandra is a 23-year-old student of English language and literature, about to write her thesis. No one knows that Alexandra runs personal ads under the nickname, "The Slovenian Girl" and that prostitution is her secret source of money which she desperately needs after buying a flat with loan. An accomplished manipulator, liar and a bit of a thief. Alexandra has plans for her life, but after a tryst with a European politician who suddenly dies of a stroke she discovers that life is not as easy as she naively expected.

Kozole says the film is "a portrait of a young woman torn by conflicting feelings about herself and the world around her. She loses her sense of reality and appreciation of her own body, all because - as puts it - she wants to assure herself a better life."

Slovenian Girl was selected to open the 12th Festival of Slovenian Film and has simultaneously been released theatrically in Slovenia. The film has been shown at film festivals in Sarajevo, Toronto and Reykjavik, and is scheduled for Pusan, Warsaw, Rotterdam, and Göteborg on what looks like a long festival journey.

The €1.5 million film is an Emotion Film (www.emotionfilm.si) production, with coproducers from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Germany.
