Cyprus State TV Employees Stage Protest

By FNE Staff

Employees of public broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) staged a protest on 30 March 2011 over delayed payment of wages, and planned to stage more protests on 31 March.

According to Cyprus's Famagusta Gazette, the delay in payment is due to a prolonged debate over the station's budget. CyBC operates two domestic TV channels, four radio stations, and one international satellite channel on a budget of 47 million euros.

The debate saw some critics accusing the station of not being an objective broadcaster.

The station's employees will not receive salaries until the station's budget is approved.
