PRODUCTION: Signal Begins Filming

    PRAGUE: Czech director Tomas Rehorek is shooting Signal, a Czech comedy, for producer Tomas Hoffman, who also produced the 2010 Czech blockbuster Women in Temptation.

    The film is described as a heart-warming comedy from the Czech countryside. It is produced by Hoffman's company Infinity Prague.

    "I believe the time of successful Czech comedies is far from being over. This time we are trying to make a very human comedy with a heart that could be reminiscent of the old Menzel film My Sweet Little Village (Vesničko má středisková, 1985, which received an Oscar nomination)," Hoffman said.

    The film's young director was nominated for the 2011 Discovery Film Critics Prize for for his docudrama PIKO. The script by Marek Epstein tells the story of two young men arriving in a remote village to build a mobile phone antenna, where they are welcomed by the villagers, who see it as their route to a quick fortune. The leads are played by two rising Czech stars, Vojta Dyk and Kryštof Hádek.

    Hoffman estimated the budget of the Signál to be around 25 million CZK (1 million euros) with 4 milion CZK from the State Fund for Cinema. The film is co-producer is leading commercial broadcaster TV Nova (www.nova.cz) with development support from HBO. The film will be released in cinemas the spring of 2012 by Bontonfilm (www.bontonfilm.cz).
