Czechs and Balances in March Film Lineup

    PRAGUE: Following a quiet January and February, Czech film releases will dominate the March 2013 cinema schedules, with at least seven films, including a trio of potential crowd-pleasers, opening over the course of five weeks.

    The extended calendar includes the premiere of Jiri Menzel’s first production since his 2006 film based on an iconic Czech literary masterpiece, I Served the King of England. His new film Skirt Chasers (Suknickari) is set to open on 4 April. The romantic comedy about a small town opera troupe stars Libuše Šafránková, Jan Hartl, Martin Huba, Jiřina Jirásková, and Ivana Chýlková,

    Producer Adam Dvorak has his own romantic comedy hitting Czech cinemas on 14 March, Martin and Venus directed by Jirí Chlumský. The story, of a husband who takes over his wife’s household and family duties for a month, stars Marek Taclík Kristýna Boková-Lišková, Jan Budař, Tomáš Hanák and Zuzana Stivínová.

    Czech animation gets another boost with Lucky Four Serving the King directed by Michal Zabka and produced by Bio Illusion. The film is based on a popular and long-lasting children’s comic book series.

    Documentaries also get theatrical play. Among the films arriving in cinemas are The Story of Mr. Love about a schizophrenic man and directed by Dagmar Smržová; Searching for the President directed by Tomáš Kudma about the first direct presidential election (currently underway) held in the Czech Republic; and 5 Rules directed by Vavřinec Menšl, which explores the question of how quickly people will submit to a totalitarian system.

    The month’s releases is rounded out with a thriller set in a northern industrial city, Isabel co-directed by Lukáš Melník and Marcel Škrkoň which opens on 14 March.

    The March schedule precedes one of the most important months for Czech cinema, with the national film Festival Finale taking place in Plzen 21-24 April.
