Czech Switch to Digital TV on Target

By FNE Staff

The Czech Republic is on schedule to complete the switch from analog TV to digital terrestrial broadcast by the end of 2011.

According to the Prague Post, the recent demise of digital channel ZI will have a negative impact on the switch, with the decline in license revenues. Monthly license fee for digital channels have been increased, making it more difficult for smaller channels on the market.

The Czech Republic's first digital multiplex broadcasts four channels of public broadcaster Czech TV. The second multiplex broadcasts channels operated by commercial broadcasters Nova TV, Prima TV and TV Barrandov. The third multiplex had hosted Z1. It is expected to host a new children's channel, TV Pohoda, launching in spring 2011.
