FNE at KVIFF: Punk in Africa Plans South African Premiere

Written by Cathy Meils

KARLOVY VARY: Czech-based American producer Jeffrey Brown told FNE he has three films in the pipeline, including the music documentary Punk in Africa, now finishing post-production for a 28 July 2011 premiere in Durban, South Africa.

The Czech-South African film is produced by South African company Meerkat and Czech company Peligros Productions on a very low budget. "I pullefd in every favor," Brown said. The film was pre-sold to Germany, Switzerland, and Austria through Red Bull Media, and to South Africa. Negotiations are now underway for a sale in the Czech Republic. Berlin-based Rise and Shine is handling world sales.

Brown said the film, described as "the untold story of punk music across three African countries - Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa - from the early 1970's to the present," has attracted a great deal of interest from festivals, especially those with underground and music themes.

Next up is Listopad written by revered Czech author Arnost Lustig and directed by Gary K. Griffin. The film is the feature debut for the documentary filmmaker. Listopad has completed shooting and plans to complete postproduction by the end of 2012, coming in at a budget of under $1 million. The film is produced by Brown's company UFO Pictures (line producer on Czech films Mamas and Papas, Kooky's Return, and Lidice) and production company Bear and Dove.

Brown received a CZK 200,000 grant from the Czech State Film Fund for the third film on his slate, Escape from Somalia directed by David Calek, winner of the Best Documentary prize in the Plzen FINALE festival for Heaven Hell.

The producer, who made his name with the Czech-American indie film Rexpatriates told FNE he plans to branch out to work in the U.S., developing coproduction with the Czech Republic from a base in the state of Texas, which has a health film tax rebate system.
