RIGA: Inara Kolmane is working on her archive-footage based documentary project about the intimate side of the life behind the Iron Curtain in Sex And The USSR, A Double Life/Sekss un PSRS, dubultā dzīve.

During an episode of US-Soviet Space Bridge, an experimental 80’s TV talk show made to connect the East and the West, a participant of the discussion coined a phrase that has, even to this day, remained a popular saying: “There is no sex in the USSR… there is only love.” This is only one of many examples Kolmane and her team use to illustrate the absurd level of ignorance towards sex in the Soviet Union.

The film is a co-production between Latvia and France and has been in production for 5 years. The first funding by the National Film Centre of Latvia was granted in 2010, since then the film has raised more than 70,000 EUR. The film is produced by Janis Juhnevics, Kolmane’s long-time colleague, and Estelle Robin You.

Sex And The USSR, A Double Life was supposed to be in post-production by now, but due to the political events in Europe the production schedule has been delayed. The production team is still working towards raising additional funding and searching for archive footage. For now the national premiere has been set for autumn 2015.
