The Witcher, directed by Oscar nominated Tomasz Bagiński (Cathedral, Platige Image), is planned as a major fantasy feature with elements of animation and CGI. Platige Films, a film production division of Platige Image, received 150,000 PLN of development funding from the Polish Film Institute in October 2014 and now is moving into the next stage of the project. Platige Image informed FNE that the coproducer of The Witcher is the US based Sean Daniel Company [SDC].
The Witcher saga is one of the most popular Polish sci-fi series, translated into over 40 languages. Most recently the books served as the basis for an award winning game series produced by the Polish company CD Projekt Red. Platige Image studio produced the cinematic sequences for all three parts of the game. The third game of the series, titled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was released on 19 May 2015 and became an instant international best-seller.
The film is planned as the first of a series and will be produced for international distribution. The screenwriter for this project is Thania St. John, a Hollywood screenwriter most popular for her work on Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Grimm. The film is produced by Jarosław Sawko and Piotr Sikora of Platige Films and Sean Daniel and Jason Brown from SDC’s side. The budget has not been announced.
The premiere is planned for 2017.
