The Polish Eagles, emceed by Maciej Stuhr, was broadcast by the TVP 2 (www.tvp.pl). Three films dominated the awards ceremony. Dark House directed by Wojciech Smarzowski won four Polish Eagles out of eight nominations, including the Audience Choice Award, Best Script and Best Director. Snow White and Russian Red directed by Xawery Żuławski took the awards for Best Actor and Best Sound.
The gala began with personal statements from producer Dariusz Jabłonski and director Agnieszka Holland, both commenting on the significance of the Polish Film Awards and the value of the independent choices made by the members of the Polish Film Academy (www.pnf.pl). Also addressing the audience was the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski, who said, "2009 was a phenomenal year for Polish culture overall and especially for film. I do not envy the members of the Academy who had an especially hard choice this year. We should all be proud that we have so much great activity in Polish culture."
During the event Holland was reelected President of the Polish Film Academy for her second term. "I strongly hope that during the next two years we will establish an exchange of ideas between the Polish filmmakers and that our younger colleagues will be active in bringing them to life," Holland said at her reinstatement.
Also attending was Agnieszka Odorowicz, Director of the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) which co-financed the Polish Film Awards along with the MEDIA Desk Poland (www.mediadeskpoland.eu). The Polish Eagles were organized by the Independent Film Foundation in co-operation with the Masovian Marshall's Office (www.mazovia.pl) and Max Film Intitution (www.mazfilm.com.pl). The official partner of the Polish Film Awards is PricewaterhouseCoopers (www.pwc.com.pl), which handled the voting process.
