PRODUCTION: Syrena Films backs Cheronobyl 2011

    WARSAW: Polish company Syrena Films will co-produce and distribute the new film by Patryk Vega, director one of the hit Polish comedy Ciacho. Syrena (www.syrenafilms.com ) has signed a co-production agreement with East Pictures (www.eastpictures.pl ), the executive producer of the title. Shooting is planned for the end of September.

    Chernobyl 2011 is an ambitious 3D project that will be shot in English to increase appeal abroad and Syrena Films reports that distribution is already planned for Asia. The budget and further details on the project are still under wraps.
    East Pictures is the first production company on the Polish market to have its debut at the NewConnect market and is has introduced an innovative production system based on generating capital via the Wasaw Stock Exchange. Syrena, encouraged by the great box office and reviews for Ciacho, agreed to back Vega's new project, East Pictures' second endeavor.

    Waldemar Leszczyński, president of Syrena, says he is especially impressed by the producer's means of generating production funds. "Acquiring so much capital for film production from the stock market is a step forward for Polish cinema," he said. "Syrena Films sees great potential in this project." Aside from signing onto the co-production, Syrena has also acquired theatrical and home DVD rights.
