From the nine films shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film only five will make to the final list which will be known on 15 January. The Oscars ceremony will take place on 22 February. The list of the shortlisted films includes Damián Szifrón's Wild Tales (Argentina), Abderrahmane Sissako's Timbuktu (Mauritania), Paula van der Oest's Accused (Netherlands), Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan (Russia), Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure (Sweden) and Alberto Arvelo's The Liberator (Venezuela).
Pawel Pawlikowksi's Ida was also submitted at the Oscars in four non-foreign categories: Best Directing, Best Script, Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Acctress. Ida is produced by Phoenix Film (DK) and Opus Film (PL) in association with Portobello Pictures (GB) and Canal Plus, with the support of Polish Film Institute.
Zaza Urushadze's Tangerines is an Estonian/Georgian coproduction between Allfilm and Cinema 24. It's an unprecedent success for the Georgian cinema, which has another coproduction nominated at the Golden Globes, George Ovashvili's Corn Island, produced by the Georgian company Alamdary Films in coproduction with France's Arizona Productions, Germany's 42film, Axman Production from the Czech Republic and Kazakhfilm from Kazakhstan. Both films are supported by the Georgian National Film Centre.
