PRODUCTION: Süskind Filming in Romania

By Iulia Blaga

BUCHAREST: Rudolf van den Berg's feature film Süskind is a war drama based on true events. In Amsterdam, 1942, Walter Süskind, a Jew, befriended SS officer Ferdinand Aus der Funten in an attempt to save a group of children from the death camp. He managed to save almost one thousand until he himself was caught.

The shooting started March in Belgium and Netherlands and will wrap 30 June 2011 in Romania. The main shooting in Romania began in the second half of May, Bogdan Moncea Marketing Manager with Castel Film (www.castelfilm.ro) told FNE. The Jewish Theater and a synagogue in Bucharest were used as locations, but most of the filming is at Castel Studios where an entire Amsterdam street has been built.

The film is a Dutch co-production between Cadenza Films B.V. (www.cadenzafilms.com) and Fu Works (www.fuworks.nl). Castel Film is providing facilities. The producers are San Fu Maltha, Jeroen Koolbergen and Reinier Selen. The Dutch premiere is set for Christmas 2011.

Rudolf van den Berg and Chris W.Mitchell wrote the script. Guido van Gennep is the DOP. The cast includes Jeroen Spitzenberger (as resistance hero Walter Süskind), Nyncke Beekhuyzen (as Hanna Süskind, replacing Lotte Verbeek who fell ill after the shooting started), and Karl Markovics (as SS Hauptsturmführer Aus der Fünten). The cast includes Romanian actors George Nemeş, Coca Bloos and Tudor Aaron Istodor.
