FNE at TIFF Romanian Days: Toto and His Sisters

    CLUJ-NAPOCA: Alexander Nanau's acclaimed documentary Toto and His Sisters/Toto şi surorile lui will screen in the national competition Romanian Days at Transilvania IFF (29 May-7 June 2015).

    Produced by HBO Europe in coproduction with Strada Film and Alexander Nanau Production, Toto and His Sisters follows three siblings (a boy and his older sisters) from a neglected neighbourhood in Bucharest as they try to survive while their mother is in prison for drug trafficking.

    Shot over the course of several years, the film is an uncompromising yet emotional story of survival which becomes self-reflective when the director gives a digital camera to one of the girls and she start questioning the reality around her.

    After the world premiere in San Sebastian the film became a festival success winning awards including the Silver Eye Award at East Silver Market in the Czech Republic, the Grand Prix at Premiers Plans Festival, Best Documentary at Warsaw Film Festival, Best International Documentary at Zurich Film Festival, and Honorable Mention and Prize of Ecumenical Jury at Dok Leipzig.

    In Romania Toto and His Sisters received the Gopo Award for Best Documentary in 2014 and the trophy for Best Film in 2014 awarded by Radio Romania Cultural. Toto and His Sisters premiered on HBO Romania on 18 December 2014.

    Autlook Filmsales secured broadcasting on HBO Romania, HBO Hungary, HBO Poland, HBO Czech Republic, HBO Adria, HBO Netherlands, HBO Bulgaria, RTL Geo TV, ETV Estonia, DR Denmark, VRT Belgium, RTS Switzerland, SF Switzerland, RAI 3, SVT Sweden, YLE Finland, YES Doc Israel and TVO Canada. The film will also be released in cinemas in France and Italy in 2015.

    Alexander Nanau received the Emmy Award for Arts Programming for The World According to Ion B./Lumea văzută de Ion B. (HBO Romania) in 2010.
