FESTIVALS: Three Romanian Feature Films in the Official Selection in Cannes

    BUCHAREST: Graduation / Bacalaureat by Cristian Mungiu and Sieranevada by Cristi Puiu have been selected in the Official Competition of the 69th Cannes Film Festival while Dogs, the debut feature of another Romanian, Bogdan Mirică, was selected in Un Certain Regard.

    Graduation/Bacalaureat aka Family Photos is a coproduction between Romania, France and Belgium, while Sieranevada is a coproduction involving Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia and France.

    Dogs is a French/Romanian/Bulgarian coproduction. Romania is also represented in the Official Competition by a minority coproduction. Toni Erdmann by the German director Maren Ade is a coproduction between Germany, Austria and Romania (Ada Solomon's Hi Film Productions).

    Two Czech minority coproductions were also selected.

    Personal Shopper by Olivier Assayas, a ghost story taking place in the fashion underworld of Paris, was selected to the Competition and The Dancer by Stéphanie Di Giusto about Loïe Fuller, the famous dancer, who was the toast of the Folies Bergères at the turn of the 20th century, will be a part of Un Certain Regard.



    Both films are made in coproduction with the Czech production company Sirena Film and were supported by the State Cinematography Fund Czech Republic (minority coproduction support and film incentives).

    Romania is also the only CEE country selected for the Short Film Competition with 4:15 p.m.. The End of the World / 4:15p.m. Sfârșitul lumii by Cătălin Rotaru and Gabi Virginia Sarga,while short films from Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary were selected for the Cinéfondation section: All Rivers Run to the Sea / Toate râurile curg în mare by Alexandru Badea (UNATC, Romania), Fine/ Dobro by Marta Hernaiz Pidal (film.factory, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and The Noise of Licking / A nyalintas nesze by Nadja Andrasev (Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Hungary)

     

    The Official Selection of the 69th Cannes Film Festival was announced on 14 April 2016.
