The Concert is the story of a former director of the Bolshoi Theater, fired because of his refusal to get rid of his Jewish players, who finds himself a janitor in the same institution 25 years later.
"I don't know if humour is missing in our world, it's not of me to say, but in these not so funny times I need it in order to have some distance," the Romanian born French filmmaker told FNE.
The Concert was filmed mainly in Bucharest, and also in Moscow and Paris, and is a French-Romanian-Belgian-Italian co-production. Shooting started in May 2008 and was completed in August.
The film is produced by Alain Attal and the French company Les Productions du Trésor (http://www.productionsdutresor.com). The co-producers are Oï Oï Oï Productions (Mihaileanu's own company), Castel Film (http://www.castelfilm.ro/), Panache Productions, Bim Distribuzione (http://www.bimfilm.com/), France 3 Cinéma (http://www.france3.fr), and Mars Films (http://www.marsfilms.com/).
The film received €400,000 grant from the Romanian National Centre for Cinema and €600,000 from Eurimages in 2008, Bogdan Moncea, marketing director at Castel Film, told FNE.
It was also pre-sold to Weinstein Company for over $1 million, being bought in Australia (Hopscotch), Great Britain (Optimum), Canada (Seville), Scandinavia (Cinema Mondo), and Japan (Comstock) as well. Wild Bunch is the sales company.
The Russian, French, and Romanian cast includes Alexei Guskov, Mélanie Laurent, Dimitri Nazarov, Miou-Miou, Vlad Ivanov and Jacqueline Bisset.
The Concert will be released by the end of the year.
