The €28 million series is produced by Germany's Tandem Communications (www.tandemcom.de) and Canada's Take 5 Productions (www.take5productions.ca) in association with Canada's Galafilm (www.galafilm.com), the UK's Ridley Scott and Tony Scott's Scott Free (www.rsafilms.com) and Hungary's Mid Atlantic Films (www.world-without-end.tv/mid-atlantic-films).
After shoots in Hungary and Austria, Caton-Jones with his 225-member crew arrived in Slovakia to take advantage of the local architecture. Shooting locations include Bojnice Castle in the west of the country and the Gothic-style St. Elizabeth's Cathedral in the eastern Slovak city of Košice.
"The castle and the cathedral are among the most beautiful historical sites in Europe," Howard Ellis, one of the producers, told the Plus Jeden Deň daily. "It is a great honour for us to be here."
Based on a novel by Ken Follett and set in 14th century England during the Hundred Years' War, the eight-hour epic relates the circumstances leading to a peasant's revolt against their oppressors.
Set to hit the screens in 2012, the series boasts an all-star casting featuring, among others, Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City), Miranda Richardson (Damage, Enchanted April), Ben Chaplin (The Thin Red Line) and Peter Firth (Spooks, Pearl Harbor). To date, the distribution rights to the series have been sold to more than 40 TV channels around the world.
The shooting in Slovakia will wrap on 29 October 2011.
