Slovakia Selects The Interpreter as Oscar Bid

    BRATISLAVA: Acclaimed Slovak director Martin Šulík’s feature The Interpreter / Tlmočník has been chosen by the Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA) as the official candidate by Slovakia for an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for submission in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The 91th Oscars will be held on 24 February 2018.

    The road movie stars Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel and Toni Erdmann actor Peter Simonischek. The film depicts the story of two elderly men, who accidentally discover similarities between their families’ tragic issues during WW II.

    Šulík's company Titanic produced the film together with Rudolf Biermann´s In Film. Coproduction partners are Austrian coop99, Slovak RTVS and the Czech Television. The project was supported by the Slovak Audiovisual Fund and the Czech State Cinematography Fund.

    The Interpreter, which had its world premiere in the 2018 Berlinale Special programme, was selected as Slovakia Oscar bid out of 12 titles.
