Koliba sold to financial group

By Jana Kadlecova

Financial group J&T has bought a 65 percent stake in Bratislava's Koliba film studio from 1. garantovana for 12.3 million Euro.

J&T, one of Slovakia's leading investment groups, was the only competitor in a public competition for the languishing studio. J&T partner Igor Rattaj is a member of the executive board of 1.garantovana.

J&T also owns commercial broadcaster Joj television which is housed in the Koliba complex. J&T purchased the studio's debt as well as the grounds around the studios. Koliba has been dubbed the Slovak Beverly Hills, with per square meter prices double those in other parts of Bratislava.

Koliba Studios was privatized by the children of former right-wing prime minister Vladimir Meciar. Their company MMM remains the minority owner. However, there are more than 100 creditors with claims against the studio.

Koliba studio is the subject of a new documentary from Slovak filmmaker Zuza Piussi, screened in Slovakia during the recent Febiofest.
