RTVS to Lay Off Over 400 Employees

BRATISLAVA: Slovak public-service Radio and Television of Slovakia (www.rtvs.sk) plans to scrap 408 jobs over the next twelve months, with the first pink slips to be delivered in just a few days, RTVS head Miloslava Zemková has announced.

Zemková declined to specify which posts will be made redundant, though she hinted that the television division will be affected more than the radio service, adding that clerical posts, the general director's department and the economic department will most likely face layoffs, Slovakia's TASR newswire reported.

The public broadcaster, which currently employs around 1,600 people, has engaged in multiple cost-cutting efforts as it faces a loss of more than €50 million. Though its 2011 budget plan includes spending cuts totalling €23 million, RTVS projects a loss of another €5 million in 2011.
