THE KRZYSZTOF KIEŚLOWSKI SCRIPTEAST AWARD 2021 FOR THE BEST SCRIPT FROM EASTERN EUROPE HAS BEEN PRESENTED AT THE 74th CANNES FILM FESTIVAL IN THE 15TH EDITION

AN ENEMY, by Teresa Zofia Czepiec and Maciej Sobieszczański from Poland, has won the Krzysztof Kieślowski ScripTeast Award  2021 for the Best Eastern Europan Script.

The award, including a checque for €10.000, was presented on July 13th  this year during the Cannes Film Festival by the ScripTeast Artistic Board: Doreen Boonekamp, Sandy Lieberson, Antonio Saura, Manfred Schmidt, and Simon Perry, along with longtime heads of studies Christian Routh and Tom Abrams.

In their citation, the Artistic Board state: “We were full of praise about the way the screenwriters of this script have created such a fascinating main character who is struggling to establish her place in an indifferent and complicated world. Her incandescent rage against the people and institutions who are supposed to be responsible for her makes for a compelling and tense drama which sometimes veers seamlessly into thriller territory, even though the protagonist is just nine years old!”

The Artistic Board have also decided to award a Special Mention to a polished culture clash drama LEARN TO CRY by Denijal Hasanović (Bosnia & Herzegovina).“It is written with admirable economy and manages to create an escalating sense of dread as it is gradually revealed what the two main characters are planning to do after a terrible tragedy in their lives. The sense of how powerless refugees feel in an alien culture that constantly misunderstands them is sensitively portrayed with great skill.“

The winner was chosen from the 12 screenplays from 7 Central and Eastern European countries that took part in the 15th edition.
