The European Film Academy has announced that Tales from the Magic Garden, directed by David Súkup, Patrik Pašš, Leon Vidmar and Jean-Claude Rozec, has been nominated in two categories at the 38th European Film Awards: Best Film and Best Animated Feature. In the first round of the selection process, members of the European Film Academy shortlisted 67 outstanding feature-length films. From this group, comprising 44 fiction features, 15 documentaries and 8 animated feature films, the final nominations were announced today. The winners will be revealed on 17 January 2026.

A co-production between the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and France, Tales from the Magic Garden celebrated its world premiere in the Berlinale Generation Kplus programme and has since been presented internationally, including at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

The film follows three children spending the night at their grandfather’s house. To fill the silence after losing their grandmother, the family’s storyteller, they begin inventing their own tales, discovering the magical power of imagination. The filmmakers highlight storytelling as an important force that shapes relationships, helps us cope with life's challenges and find comfort and hope in a world of fantasy.

Ten years passed between the signing of the adaptation rights with Czech author Arnošt Goldflam and the moment audiences could finally see the film on the big screen. Its creation involved 16 animators working frame by frame, more than 150 professionals across a wide range of disciplines and 457 shooting days.

Being in the company of such a remarkable line-up, I am truly pleased to see that handcrafted puppet animation, created frame by frame, remains valued and continues to bring audiences to European cinemas,” says Martin Vandas of Maurfilm.

The feature stop-motion film Tales from the Magic Garden is an international coproduction between Maurfilm (Czech Republic), Artichoke (Slovakia), ZVVIKS (Slovenia) and Vivement lundi ! (France). The French studio Vivement Lundi ! is also celebrating a second nomination for their feature film Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake.
