    July 10, 2009 - Karlovy Vary

Applause, by Martin Pieter Zandvliet, has won the Europa Cinemas Label as Best European film at the 44nd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, it was announced today by a jury of four Europa Cinemas exhibitors.

The Jury issued the following statement about the film: "Great piece of cinema about an actress whose relationship with her family is ruined by alcohol. A powerful and moving drama with brilliant cinematic language and sustained performance by Paprika Steen, fulfilling every scene.

We believe that European audiences will appreciate this magnificent first feature from Danish director Martin P. Zandvliet, Applause."

Synopsis: When the critically acclaimed actress Thea leaves rehab, she confronts a difficult choice. During her heavy drinking period she divorced and lost custody of her two boys. She now craves to re-establish her life as a mother and prove herself and others that she is capable. Persuaded by her tough manipulative, but charming personality, her ex-husband takes an understanding stance. Up against the rigorous demands of stage life and a past that haunts her, she must face her inner demons while clinging to the goal she has set for herself.

Applause will now receive the support of the Europa Cinemas exhibitors who commit themselves to extend the length of its run on screen and to reinforce the promotion campaign directed at the general audience and the media.
