VIENNA:  Participants at the Film New Europe Association’s Focus on Austrian CEE Coproduction will launch a new network of Austrian and Central and Eastern European film funds and producers to build on the success of the event hosted at the Austrian Film Institute on 9 October in Vienna.

VENICE: New York-based musician and performance artist Laurie Anderson’s Heart of a Dog screens in competition in Venice as her first feature-length film since the documentary Home of the Brave 30 years ago.  

VENICE: We have seen the future and it is white and chic but not much fun. That seems to be the message in director Drake Doremus’s visually stunning but rather simplistic new film Equals that screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival.  

VENICE: Tom Hooper who directed The King’s Speech arrives in Venice with another film based on real life characters this time the story of transgender pioneer, Lili Elbe, in The Danish Girl.

VENICE: Director Cary Fukunaga’s unflinching Beasts of No Nation based on the novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala about the life of Agu, a child soldier torn from his family to fight in the civil war of an African country is not for the faint of heart.  

VENICE: Directors Charile Kaufman and Duke Johnson bring a unique creative work to Venice with the stop motion puppet animation film Anomalisa.  

VENICE: Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski returns to competition at Venice Film Festival with his new film 11 Minutes after a winning the Special Jury Prize for his film Essential Killing starring Vincent Gallo at the festival in 2010.  

VIENNA: The 4th edition of the LET’S CEE Film Festival running from 1-11 October 2015 in Vienna awarded its top prize for Best Feature Film to Ivona Juka’s Croatian, Slovenian, Serbian and Montenegro coproduction You Carry Me. The award for Best Documentary went to The Queen of Silence (Poland) directed by Agnieszka Zwiefka.

GDYNIA:  The Grand Prix of the 40th Gdynia Film Festival for Best Film went to  Malgorzata Szumowska’s Body. Already highly regarded the film was screened earlier in the year to critical acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival where Szumowska won a Silver Bear for Best Director.  

VENICE: The Golden Lion for Best Film at the 72 Venice International Film Festival (2-12 September) went to Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas’ From Afar a story set in the run-down centre of Caracas.
