Film is very emotional and affecting. The second film was “Battle of Warsaw - 1920”, Jerzy Hoffman, which was projected at the opening ceremony of BIAFF as well. Master Class of the film director was also planned for the BIAFF, though, unfortunately, Jerzy Hofmann could not arrive at this time. The third film was from in festival feature films selection: “In the Darkness” by Agnieszka Holland. Her name is famous and well appreciated among intellectual film vultures. Her debut “Provincial Actors” received International Critics Prize at Cannes Film Festival, in 1980. Her film “In the darkness” is based on facts. Director was successful to show the whole cruelness of holocaust, attitude of the society to Jews. Human instinct to survive is well depicted in her film, showing a face of a real hero, with all his imperfections, avoiding stereotyped, sacred image of the saviour. Film is very emotional, told heartwarmingly and keeping the spectators stunned during the whole film. Next film was in competition film by Ukrainian film director Eva Neyman “House with Turret”. Film is exemplary for those to learn how to make masterpiece with small budget. Film is very slow in action, we may compare it to the works of Andrei Tarkovsky. Film is made based on autobiographic novel of Friedrich Gorenstein (Author of Solaris). Film is about soviet life during WWII, namely, struggle of 8 years old boy with the surrounding imperfect society. This wonderful work helps the spectators to think more deeply about the issues presented in the film. The first festival day was closed with “Holy Motors”, a film by Leos Carax, from master collection. French film director is very famous amongst art-house lovers, thus the Movie Theater was full of spectators. Besides, anyone who was unable to attend the film, will have another opportunity to watch the film on September 22, at “Apollo”, at 14:30 p.m. Thus, the first day of the Festival was very successful and pleasant for art-house film vultures.
