“In 2012, the festival has again grown substantially, doubling the number of represented countries by adding the three Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and three ex-Yugoslavian countries (Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia). With over 50 different feature films and 40 short films on the programme, including documentaries and animated works, over 20 guests, an official competition, special-themed evenings, debates, screenings for children and teenagers, as well as six musical events, a photo exhibition, gastronomic events and a charity project, the CinEast festival presents a very rich and varied excursion into the cinematography and wider culture of the Central and Eastern European region.”
(Radek Lipka, programme director of CinEast festival)The aim of the CinEast festival is to present a selection of mostly new and recent films, often awarded prizes at major festivals but rarely seen in the cinemas of the Grand Duchy, to the multi-national Luxembourg audience. It also strives to promote the cultures of the participating countries through various accompanying events (music, culinary, exhibitions etc.) and to become a platform for meetings, discussions and exchanges within the multicultural society of Luxembourg.
Eight films compete in the official competition: Archeo (J. Cvitkovič), Everybody in Our Family (R. Jude), Gulf Stream Under the Iceberg (Y. Pashkevich), Long Live the Family! (R. Sedláček), Made in Ash (I. Grófová), Rose (W. Smarzowski), Tilva Rosh (N. Ležaić) and Vegetarian Cannibal (B. Schmidt). The jury comprises five eminent personalities from the Luxembourgish film scene – including the director Beryl Koltz who is the president of the jury – as well as the Hungarian director György Pálfi. The programme features two thematic cycles: Back to the Roots (with films addressing the issues of roots, origins and identity in both individual and collective dimensions) and FunnyEast (a selection of the best comedies). The Cinéfocus section provides a closer look at the work of György Pálfi, the Polish actor Robert Więckiewicz, Czech director Michal Hogenauer and production companies Studio Uljana Kim (Lithuania) and Staragara (Slovenia). Among the guests attending CinEast 2012 are: Silviu Purcărete, György Pálfi, Jan Cvitkovič, Juris Poškus, Nikola Ležaić, Anca Damian, Robert Sedláček and Kristijonas Vildžiūnas.
In addition to the films, CinEast 2012 also offers an extensive photography exhibition “Back to the Roots” with over a hundred works by six photographers from Poland, the Czech Rep. and Hungary, numerous musical events (Twinkle Brothers&Trebunie Tutki, Baltic night, Balkan night, Magical DJ/VJ night and cinéconcert Szaza plays Polanski), as well as gastronomy evenings with delicacies from around the region.
For the first time the festival includes a workshop for film professionals CinEast Pro aimed at promoting co-productions.
