In collaboration with the International Division of the Hungarian National Film Fund “Magyar Filmunió” Kaunas International Film Festival for the first time in Lithuania presents a selected retrospective of Hungarian film master Miklós Jancsó.
The festival is grateful for this significant collaboration with the festival manager of “Magyar Filmunió”, the International Division of Hungarian National Film Fund, Katalin Vajda.
The profound value and influence of Janscó's work in the context of the European cinema is without doubt. It is by no coincidence that director Kornél Mundruczó dedicated his Un Certain Regard winning film White God (also screening at the festival) to the memory of M. Jancsó and his works.
Janscó's exceptional films abound in themes topical in the contemporary context. Corruption amongst authority remains a recurring motif which arose from the situation in which he operated. Here Janscó made observations between the relationship between society and it's political institutions. His powerful means of expression have been constantly attracting cinema lovers for generations. His films are characterised by a stylisation of visual imagery, elegant shots, theatricality along with depicting historical eras and rural locations.
The artist, who is equally valued both by the public and critics still garners high praise and has received many awards. Various achievements on the international stage include Best Director prize in 1972, a special prize for lifetime achievements in 1979 also at Cannes, the special jury award in 1987 at the Venice Biennale and Best Director prize in 1992 in the Montreal World Film Festival.
Kaunas IFF pays respect in the memory of the honoured director by showing nine prominent films: The Round-up (Szegénylegények, 1965), God Walks Backwards (Isten hátrafelé megy, 1991), Lord’s Lantern in Budapest (Nekem lámpást adott kezembe az Úr Pesten, 1998), So Much for Justice (Oda az igazság, 2010), Red Psalm (Még kér a nép, 1971), The Confrontation(Fényes szelek, 1969), Silence and Cry (Csend és kiáltás, 1968), Hungarian Rhapsody (Magyar rapszódia, 1978), The Red and The White (Csillagosok, katonák, 1967).
The 8th Kaunas International Film Festival takes place
September 24 – October 5 2014 in Kaunas, Lithuania. The festival programme is touring in Vilnius, Panevėžys, Šiauliai.
