Jihlava IDFF reveals its programme and special guests

SURREALISM / LIVING LEGEND / PREPARATION FOR UFO / CZECH FUNERAL / STEVE JOBS / OUT OF NORWAY, MIGRANTS / INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON EXPERIMENTAL FILM / JULIAN ASSANGE AND PUSSY RIOT / RADIODOCUMENTARY / SHAMPOO BOY

The 19th Jihlava IDFF 2013 reveals the highlights of its festival programme. Each visitor will have the opportunity to meet the documentary film legend, Artavazd Peleshyan, whose contribution to the art of film montage is almost as crucial as that of the film editing pioneer, Sergei Eisenstein. Peleshyan will arrive to Prague several days before the festival where he will be, by prior appointment, available for interviews.

For the first time in history, the Czech audience will  have the rare opportunity to see a retrospective of French filmmaker and avant-gardist Eugene Deslaw, whose masterful work with film footage and images raises the following question: “How come that I haven’t heard of him yet?” The answer is simple – because it took us almost a year of investigating twenty film archives all across Europe to find his films. Unlike audiences in many other countries, Czech festival visitors will now enjoy the great privilege to watch a collection of Deslaw’s films.

Similar difficulties also occur during the search for exceptional experimental films and we have therefore decided to organise the first edition of the unique Conference Fascinations that brings together Czech experimental filmmakers with the leading international distributors of this film genre within the very framework of this year’s Jihlava IDFF.

This year’s edition of the festival again opens up a space for discussing topical issues. Since we are well aware of the world’s burning issues, our film selection features titles that will help the audience see the refugee crisis from different perspectives – for example, a video diary of Emanuel, an immigrant who returns back to his native Africa, and more film highlights are on the way. Our efforts are also supported by Czech Radio – in the form of their Radiodocumentary series that captures the atmosphere, for example, at the Greek-Macedonian border.

A Danish documentary will take us even further beyond our everyday reality – offering possible scenarios of what would happen if aliens decided to pay us a visit. On top of that, the Special Events section will feature a documentary portrait of one of the greatest figures of our time – Steve Jobs, taking an often critical look at the achievements of the founder of Apple.

This year’s programme highlights will include a section focusing on surrealism, spotlighting names such as Švankmajer and Hackenschmied and exploring the relationship between avant-garde surrealism and documentary filmmaking. Aside from that, we have prepared a series documenting funerals of prominent Czech thinkers through the lens of a TV camera - section referring to this year's festival theme, which is "Eternity".

Exclusively this year, festival visitors will have a unique opportunity to talk directly to the prominent and, in the eyes of many, controversial figures – Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks and Masha Alyokhina, member of Pussy Riot.

The accompanying music programme will offer Soundwalks with Eliška Cílková, and the Czech premiere of the Viennese trio Shampoo Boy – with complimentary ear plugs.

The 19th edition of Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, the largest event of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe, takes place in Jihlava, Czech Republic between October 27 - November 1, 2015.
