European Film Festival in Romania moves online for this year’s edition

In this extraordinary context, the 24th edition of the European Film Festival (24.EFF) migrates from cinemas to online and takes place from 17 to 21 June on the TIFF Unlimited platform. On June 21, a collection of 18 films made by Romanian directors in isolation will be made available worldwide.

24.FFE comes with a selection of European short films (EUShorts) curated by Andrei Tănăsescu, the artistic director of this edition (newly appointed in the selection committee of Venice Days / Giornate degli Autori, the independent lineup that runs alongside the Venice Film Festival) and with a vast collection of films made by Romanian directors in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic (Cinem@casa / Cinem@Home)

By the end of March, it was clear that difficult weeks, if not months, laid ahead for the entire film industry. With film shoots and festivals placed on indefinite hiatus, we sent out a call for shorts – meant at first as a morale boost and opportunity for filmmakers’ creativity to be engaged. At the same time, we were curious to see and showcase the creative potential of filmmakers placed within the limited artistic confines of imposed quarantine.
The response was overwhelming. Not only did we have established filmmakers joining emerging directors, but the variety of cinematic perspectives and expressions ran from documentary, animation, fiction and experimental cinema. The end-result is a distinct, focused body of works that are at once personal, introspective yet also playful and jubilant, painting a spirited cinematic mosaic. We are extremely proud of the Cinem@casa / Cinem@home project, of the trust given to us by the filmmakers, but also of the support offered by the European Commission. stated Andrei Tănăsescu, the artistic director of 24.EFF.
