For the very first time this year, we have decided to merge fiction and documentary films as we consider both categories, despite their differences, to possess the same artistic value. Works in Progress 2021 will therefore incorporate documentaries and all the selected projects will be up for the same awards. Thus, Docs in Progress comes to an end as a separate industry presentation.
The presentation of the new arthouse fiction and documentary films in late stage of production (only in case of documentaries), post-production or recently finished films from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and North Africa will be held for the 17th time before the 55th Karlovy Vary IFF. If you have a new film planned for international release with an official premiere after summer 2021, with no international sales agent attached, please consider presenting during the online event. The awarded project will receive the Post-production Development Award in services from our festival partners UPP and Soundsquare. Besides, there are two cash awards of 5 000 EUR each from TRT and KVIFF.
How to enter a film:
Complete the entry form and submit it along with a link to two Vimeo or YouTube clips: the first 5 minutes of the film and a continuous rough-cut footage of max. 20 minutes with English subtitles that both illustrate the essence of the film.
The KVIFF selection committee will announce its decision in the beginning of June.
In order to be eligible for the Works in Progress - KVIFF 2021 selection producers and directors must submit their films by the deadline of May 15, 2021.

For the second time, we will present First Cut+. A new program created for boosting the competitiveness and marketability of feature films that previously participated in First Cut Lab. The program was launched in 2020 through a close cooperation with two dynamic & well-established film industry platforms: Trieste’s When East Meets West and Karlovy Vary IFF’s Eastern Promises Industry Days.
First Cut+ consists in the promotion of a portfolio of 16 fiction feature films at the stage of post-production, predominantly from countries with a low production capacity (at least 75% of the films) and with a focus on Central & Eastern Europe. The range of films is large: from both debut & experienced directors, small and larger budgets. 8 of the projects were presented at Trieste’s When East Meets West in January 2021, and will be presented during KVIFF Eastern Promises during the summer 2021.
Works in Progress/First Cut+ Award 2020

KVIFF is pleased to host the fifth edition of the Works in Development – Feature Launch as a follow up session where 9 selected projects from the past two Feature Launch workshops will present online to a panel of industry decision makers, including funders, sales agents, producers and festival programmers.

MIDPOINT Feature Launch is a one-year programme featuring two workshops focusing on project development, financing, and co-production opportunities for emerging film professionals from the region. After the presentation of Works in Development, the programme will end during Feature Launch Spotlight @ WEMW (during Trieste FF) with all 2021 selected producers where they will have a chance to follow up with their potential artistic and financing partners.
The best project selected in Karlovy Vary will receive KVIFF & MIDPOINT Development Award of 10 000 EUR.

For the third time, KVIFF Eastern Promises platform is happy to become the official second international hub for First Cut Lab – an expert workshop for fiction films in editing phase.
First Cut Lab Karlovy Vary is a programme designed for two feature fiction films in editing phase from the Czech Republic or Slovakia. Selected producer/director teams will screen their full rough cut in a private session and receive expert feedback on their edit from three top international film professionals (creative producers, festival programmers, sales agents, etc) as well as tailor-made advice from a consultant editor. The main goal is to foster the artistic potential of the selected rough cuts and, at the same time, to increase the sales, festival and circulation potential of the completed films.
In order to be eligible for the First Cut Lab - KVIFF 2021 selection producers and directors must submit their films by the deadline of May 15, 2021.
