Estonian Animation at Annecy & MIFA

The Estonian competition titles at Annecy

The atmospheric Luna Rossa by the masterful Priit Pärn and Olga Pärn is screening in the short film competition at Annecy – programme Official 3. Produced by Eesti Joonisfilm (EE) and Miyu Productions (FR).

He observes. She plays. Forgotten love lingers. The Moon is just a pale witness to it all. Still pale.

Following the premiere and third place on the podium of the stop-motion Winter in March by the talented Natalia Mirzoyan at La Cinef, Festival de Cannes in May, the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) keeps on adding titles to its list of successful graduation films being selected to renowned festivals.

The high standard in animation education of the school is once again highlighted and showcased with two films made by Master’s students of EKA being selected at Annecy.

The haunting and poetic Poppy Flowers by Evridiki Papaiakovou will screen at Programme 1 and The Diffusion Pilot by Aurelijus Čiupas, an experimental dialogue with artificial intelligence, in Programme 3 of the Graduation Films competition.

Remembering is a fluid affair. A daughter tries to reconcile with her mother through memories of their shared rituals, exposing the intricate aspects of their relationship. As the daughter matures, she begins to contemplate conventional notions of divinity.

If traditionally the animator is a master illusionist, conjuring motion through static mediums, what does this process look like when they are given a machine of infinite images? This journey is fueled by the conflicting nature of AI technology.
