Joost van Ginkel wrote the script based on true events. The film follows the experiences of three girls from Bulgaria, an African boy Yaya, a Swedish musical conductor Stig looking for his missing son Lukas, a Serbian war criminal Ivica and Seka from Bosnia. They accidentally meet in Amsterdam and their lives change irreversibly.
“The film is an observation of a period of time. It is both a raw and poetic praise of human strength and need for survival”, director Joost van Ginkel told the media.
Netherland’s PRPL and Bastide Films coproduced the film together with Sweden’s Göta Film and Film i Väst and Bulgaria’s KaBoAl. The nearly 1.3 m EUR budget was raised with the support of the Netherland‘s Film Fund, the Netherlands Production Incentive, the Swedish Film Institute, the Bulgarian National Film Center and Eurimages.
The film stars Anjela Nedyalkova, Silviya Petkova and Anna-Maria Nikolaeva. The cast includes Boris Isakovic, Erik Adelöw, Isaka Sawadogo, Jasna Djuricic and Magnus Krepper. Shooting took place both in the Netherlands and Bulgaria in 2014.
“The Paradise Suite is a coproduction in which seven different languages are spoken. As Bulgarian coproducers we are proud that we assured attractive locations in Sofia and Pernik. We are also happy with our strong artistic participation - Anjela Nedyalkova as a lead and six more Bulgarian actors. Composer Alexander Doychev worked in tight collaboration with Bram Meindersma”, Bulgarian coproducer Kalin Kalinov told FNE.
The Paradise Suite was selected as the Dutch entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards and is nominated for the European Film Awards 2016.
The film had its Bulgarian premiere at the 20th Sofia IFF. Media Luna New Films handles international sales. Bulgarian distribution is planned for 2016.
