PRAGUE: Prague-trained and based Slovenian director Olmo Omerzu, winner of the 2012 Czech Critics “Discovery of the Year”  award, screens his second feature Family Film in the main competition of the Cottbus Film Festival, which runs through 8 November 2015.

The Slovenian/Czech/German/Slovak/French coproduction was one of the 20 film projects that the Eurimages Fund selected to support at its June 2014 Sarajevo meeting.

A husband and wife set sail on the ocean, leaving their two children at home to explore the freedom offered them by the absence of parental supervision. But fear clouds the kids’ seemingly carefree life after they lose contact with their parents, whose boat capsizes in a storm. The timing of the parents’ return corresponds with a tragedy at home. Their son lies in the hospital badly in need of a kidney transplant. Test results show that the father is in fact not related to the boy by blood.

The film, produced by Jiří Konečný of Endorfilm with a budget of 40 m CZK (1.45 m EUR), was shot on locations in Prague and at sea in Thailand, which proved financially advantageous. The shooting took place in late summer through fall of 2014.

The film was supported by The State Cinematography Fund – Czech Republic, the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the Slovenian Film Center, MDM Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (DE) and the MEDIA Programme. The film had its Czech premiere at the IFF Ostrava Kamera Oko in late September 2015.

Omerzu’s second film, A Night Too Young, which was also produced by Endorfilm, was pitched at Connecting Cottbus in 2012.
