FNE at Cannes 2016: Georgian Cinema in Cannes

    This is the ninth time the Georgian National Film Centre is presented by the Georgian pavilion at the Cannes Film Market this year. (#105, Village International Riviera).

    The director of the Georgian National Film Centre – Zurab Maghalashvili, a representative of Georgia at the EURIMAGES Council of Europe Cinema Support Fund - Tamara Tatishvili are in charge of industrial aspects of the Pavilion, as well as David Vashadze, the Head of Film Export & Distribution Department of the Georgian National Film Centre and Nino Shervashidze – the project manager.

    Georgia will be represented in a number of programs at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

    Among the achievements of Georgia is the fact that the short film "Léthé” directed by a Georgian film director Dea Kulumbegashvili is to be screened in the section "Directors' Fortnight” of the Festival; the world premiere for the film will be held on the French Riviera.

    This is the second time the Cannes International Film Festival screens Dea Kulumbegashvili’s films. "Invisible Spaces” the debut film directed by the young filmmaker Dea Kulumbegashvili was screened in the short film section of the Festival in 2014.

    A project by Georgian film director Tinatin Kajrishvili and producer Lasha Khalvashi - "Citizen Saint” will participate in the Cinemas du Monde collaboration platform organized within the Cannes Film Market. Cinema du Monde is a unique knowledge and practice sharing platform offering filmmakers the opportunity to develop their projects, find European co-producers and meet distributors. Several other Georgian projects already participated in the platform in previous years and these projects were then made into successful films.

    Rusudan Chkooni’s project "Venice” has been selected to participate in a script development project "Scrip Teast”. The project will be presented to the representatives of the film industry in the framework of the Cannes Film Festival.

    Nino DevdarianiGeorgian film producer Nino Devdariani will represent Georgia at a special networking platform "PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE”. The platform was designed by the European Film Promotion (EFP). The programme is carried out during the Cannes Festival, providing the participants with the opportunity to meet film directors, sales agents, financiers and international media representatives.

    The 2016 Film Festival of utmost importance for Georgia, as the project "Film in Georgia” will be presented for the world film industry at the Cannes Film Festival (on May 15, at 13:00, in Harbour of Cannes), the project has already been presented in the USA. The Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia – Mr Mikheil Giorgadze will open the presentation of Cash Rebate - offering producers rebates of qualified expenses incurred in Georgia.

    The project "Film in Georgia” is jointly implemented by the Entrepreneurship Development Agency (Enterprise Georgia) of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia and the Georgian National Film Centre. The main goal of the Project is to make Georgia an attractive filmmaking centre in the East Europe and attract major filmmakers from all over the world.
